augsburg host Hoffenheim on Saturday on the opening weekend of the Bundesliga season 2021/22.
Both want to build on their victories in the first round of the DFB Cup in their first competitive games of the season last week.
Prediction for this match
Augsburg’s manager Markus Weinzierl returned to the club in April to oversee the last three games of last season and to bring them to safety after one win and two losses during that period.
Augsburg finished 13th, three points before relegation and only two places behind Saturday’s opponent.
Survival is always the first goal of the season for a team making their eleventh straight top division, but they’ll try to get off to a positive start to make their campaign less nervous this time around.
After leading Augsburg for four years until 2016, Weinzierl is returning to his first full season with one win, two draws and one defeat from his four preparatory games. However, it is worth noting that this loss went to Paris Saint-Germain.
Augsburg then moved into the first round of the DFB Cup last weekend against the amateur club Greifswalder with a 4-2 win.
However, despite their dominance for much of the game, it was far from easy and they even survived an early horror after falling just two minutes behind.
When it comes to transfers, fans have every reason to look forward to the coming season after what may have been the biggest coup in the Bundesliga transfer window to date.
German U21 international in defensive midfield Niklas Dorsch came from Ghent after helping his country win the European Under-21 Championship earlier this summer. After he was inducted into the tournament’s team, there were many suitors who considered his signature.
Away team Hoffenheim want to use their impressive record against Augsburg for a perfect start to the Bundesliga opening game.
The Kraichgauer have made eight wins against the home side in the last 12 matches, with only two defeats. However, these two defeats have occurred in the last four meetings.
Manager Sebastian Hoeneß leads the team in its second season hoping to improve on a bad campaign last year.
Hoffenheim’s eleventh place was the lowest since the 2015/16 season and meant they missed European football completely. After seven unbeaten last games, however, he wants to carry this over to the game on Saturday.
However, after a relatively short preparation period, Hoffenheim may still need a few more games to get off to a full start. The opening game in the DFB Cup on Monday was preceded by only three test games – one win, one draw and one defeat were the result.
This was followed by an away game at third division club Viktoria Köln in the cup. Although there was progress in the end, it was a much closer matter than they had hoped. A strong line-up was set up and Hoffenheim managed to win 3-2 after extra time thanks to a brace from last season’s top goalscorers Andrej Kramaric.
The Croatian striker scored 20 Bundesliga goals in 28 games last year and will again be shouldering much of the burden for his team this season after their new signings were limited to free transfers and existing players from loan deals in a COVID-hit market to return.

Augsburg have a number of injury concerns before the start. Up to five players – Reece Oxford, Tobias Strobl, Daniel Caligiuri, Alfred Finnbogason and Sergio Cordova – could be missing for the visit to Hoffenheim, although everyone is expected this month or early September.
The best goalscorer last season André Hahn is expected to start last weekend after recently recovering from a knee injury in the cup game.
Former Bayern Munich junior player Niklas Dorsch is expected to make his Bundesliga debut for the home side after showing an impressive performance on his debut against Greifswalder.
Newcomer colleague Arne Maier is also about to make his debut after being loaned from Hertha Berlin.
Meanwhile, Hoffenheim has more serious injury problems than their hosts; up to 11 first-team players could be absent, with at least seven excluded.
Ihlas Bebou, Ishak Belfodil, Ermin Bicakcic, Florian Grillitsch, Benjamin Huebner, Pavel Kaderabek and Havard Nordtveit which are expected to be completely absent.
In addition, Sargis Adamyan, Oliver Baumann, Diadie Samassekou and Robert Skov are all marked as doubtful with various problems.
This puts star player Andrej Kramaric under even more pressure, who will start again after the start of the season where he left off last season with a brace in the cup.
Augsburg possible starting line-up:
Gikiewicz; Framberger, Gouweleeuw, Uduokhai, Jago; Moravek, cod; Hahn, Jensen, Vargas; Niederlechner
Hoffenheim possible starting line-up:
Pentke; Posch, Akpoguma, Vogt, Raum; Rudy, violinist; Bruun Larsen, Baumgartner, Kramaric; Rutter
Probability: Augsburg 2-1 Hoffenheim
Goals between the two teams are likely to be expected again, but we think Augsburg will only narrowly beat them. Things are likely to get tight after finishing last season in similar positions with both players missing and trying to gain a foothold in the opening game.
