It’s a battle of Ligue 1 newbies on Sunday, like last year’s Ligue 2 rivals Clermont and Troy compete against each other again – but this time at the top of the table.
At least on paper, according to the respective results on the opening weekend, it is a duel between the championship leader and a team on the relegation zone, but a tightly contested game is to be expected at the Stade Gabriel Montpied.
Prediction for this match
Clermont’s very first season in the top French division got off to a dream start with a 2-0 away win in Bordeaux. So they are level with Angers in the goal difference.
Although Bordeaux haven’t had the best time in the last three seasons, they are a reliable, long-standing Ligue 1 team that ended up in the top half in 12 of the 13 seasons between 2005 and 2018, so Clermont’s win – especially away – is one meaningful letter of intent.
They will try to pursue it with another victory against the old enemy Troyes. The pair fought for the Ligue 2 title last season, with ESTAC ultimately winning the crown by five points.
Clermont is on the steeper trail, however, as the climb came a little out of the blue last season. The goal scorer ability of Mohamed Bayo – who hit the net 22 times – certainly played a big role, but maybe also the consistency in the coaching bench, with Pascal Gastien responsible since 2017.
Les Lanciers only made four signings in the summer before their first jump at the big time so Constance may be a policy they have full confidence in. It has certainly served them well so far as a strong preparation for the season meant that defeating Bordeaux was their fifth win in a row.
Troyes, on the other hand, has been here many times in the last ten years, in the yo-yo between Ligues 1 and 2 – they spent no more than a year in a row in each division between 2012 and 2018.
Her recent return to the major leagues threw her deeply in the deep end, with a visit from the Paris Saint-Germain superstars proving to be her opening game.
PSG was without a big name – Neymar and Angel Di Maria enjoy long summer breaks after their Copa America explosions – and we still lived in a world where Lionel Messi was a free agent, but Troyes was nonetheless clearly an underdog.
They caught the visitors off guard and took the lead after just nine minutes when Dylan ChambostThe left corner of was headed by Oualid El-Hajjam for Troyes’ first home goal against PSG since 2006.
Ultimately, the big names produced the goods and scored three points, but a 2-1 defeat is anything but embarrassing for a promoted team in the league’s biggest team and will give Troyes hope for this season.
You have to pursue that hope in games like this, however, and it won’t be an easy task – Clermont have won four of their last six Ligue 2 meetings with Troyes and will be full of aggressiveness in this game.

Clermont remains without Yohann Magnin, because of the midfielder’s cruciate ligament rupture in April, but was able to start training again at the end of September.
Salis Abdul Samed started against Bordeaux in Magnin’s absence, provided energy and defensive power in front of the back four and will certainly keep his place after a strong performance in the opening game.
After Bayo successfully transferred his goalscoring form from Ligue 2 to Ligue 1 at the first attempt, Bayo leads the line again in a 4-2-3-1, flanked by Jim Allevinah and Jodel Dossou.
Troyes is once again in good health and can pick their strongest starting XI to take their first win.
Laurent Batlles will likely stick with its tried and tested 3-5-2 formation, with Yoann Touzghar – who scored 16 goals in 36 league games last season – and is trying to find the net for the first time this season.
Clermont possible starting line-up:
Desmas; Zedadka, Hountondji, Ogier, N’Simba; Gastien, Samed, Dossou, Berthomier, Allevinah; Bayo
Troyes possible starting line-up:
Gallon; Azamoum, El Hajjam, Giraudon; Kabore, Kouame, Tardieu, Chambost, Kone; Ripart, Touzghar
Probability: Clermont 1-0 Troyes
Clermont looks unstoppable at the moment and has the better record in recent meetings between the two. It will likely be a close and hectic game – both teams understand the importance of a good result – but the home side should have enough to score three points.
