Foot Predictions shows the Ligue 1 clash on Saturday between Lyon and Montpellier HSC, including predictions, preview and possible lineups.

Lyon will endeavor to return to the top of the Ligue 1 standings when it receives an improvement Montpellier HSC to Groupama Stadium for Saturday’s final showdown.

Both teams secured the ticket to the next round of the Coupe de France in the middle of the week, with Lyon scoring Ajaccio, while Montpellier overcame the first division team, Strasbourg.

Match analysis

Five goals from five different scorers propelled Lyon to a resounding victory over a besieged Ajaccio in the Coupe de France, with Memphis Depay, Houssem Aouar, Rayan Cherki, Maxwel Cornet and new arrival Islam Slimani finding the back of the net at night.

Despite the changes sounding, Rudi Garcia he would have expected nothing less from his tireless attacks in Tuesday’s game, with that result representing Lyon’s fifth consecutive victory in all competitions.

Except for two less than impressive performances against Rennes and Metz – which hampered the title dispute – Lyon have simply been impossible to play since the turn of the year and remain in second place in what is one of the most exciting title races in recent history of Ligue 1.

With Depay (13), Karl Toko Ekambi (11) and Tino Kadewere (9) forming one of the league’s most formidable offensive tridents, Lyon have scored 25 goals in their last 10 Premier League matches, and half a century of attacks is the second best record in the 2020-21 Ligue 1 campaign behind defending champion Paris Saint-Germain.

Another three points against Montpellier would take the team to the top before Lille faced Brest on Sunday, although Lyon could also be temporarily misused by third-placed PSG, who face Nice a few hours before Les Gones’ clash with resurgent Montpellier.

Montpellier ended a series of nine unsuccessful games by beating Dijon 4-2 in Ligue 1 last weekend, and won consecutive games for the first time since November by claiming another win that boosted confidence in the Coupe de France over Strasbourg on Wednesday night.

Andy Delort recovered from an injury with a crash by breaking the deadlock on the night with his tenth goal of the campaign and a rare shot from Petar Skuletic ensured victory in the dying embers of the match, with pressure on Michel Der Zakarianshoulders relaxed temporarily for now.

It is not surprising that the results below Montpellier’s average coincided with Delort’s absence from the team, but with the influential 29-year-old back in the group, La Paillade – who ranks 11th – can now focus on heading for the right direction and stop looking over your shoulder.

However, a late penalty for Europe is probably out of the question for Montpellier, who have not won in four games away from home and have not conceded goals in 12 matches on any league lawn – only Nimes, from the hold, had a defense equally bad recently performed.

Even so, Der Zakarian’s men managed a 2-1 victory over Lyon at the Stade de la Mosson in September, and Lyon only managed to record a solitary victory in their last six games with La Paillade in Ligue 1.

Lyon's Jason Denayer celebrates with his teammates after scoring against Rennes on 9 January 2021

The centerpiece of Lyon’s midfield Thiago Mendes has been suspended for victory at the Coupe de France, but is in line with an immediate call to the engine room here, while Aouar is also expected to return after booking Ajaccio as a reserve.

Jason Denayer he remains out of the field due to a thigh problem, but the hosts have no problems with their fitness before this fight, and Garcia will inevitably receive some great hitters back in the first XI.

Toko Ekambi and Kadewere will return to the front line, despite Slimani and Cherki’s goals in the cup, while Marcelo and Leo Dubois are expected to man the rear again.

Montpellier defender Pedro Mendes also came back from a ban this weekend, but Der Zakarian seems to have resolved Hilton and Daniel Congre – who has a combined age of 78 – as his first choice at the heart of the defense.

Mihailo Ristic was an unused substitute against Strasbourg, but should return as a left-back with Ambroise Oyongo taking care of a sprained ankle, and Junior Sambia you can also return on the opposite side.

Montpellier had a wave of successful results when Delort, Gaetan Laborde and Stephy Mavididi He played as one of the top three at the start of the season, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Der Zakarian return to his tested and proven system now that Delort is fit again.

Possible initial lineup for Lyon:
Lopes; Dubois, Marcelo, Diomande, Cornet; Mendes, Aouar, Paquetá; Kadewere, Depay, Toko Ekambi

Possible initial lineup of Montpellier HSC:
Omlin; Sambia, Hilton, Congre, Ristic; Chotard, Savanier, Mollet; Laborde, Delort, Mavididi

Probability: Lyon 3-1 Montpellier HSC

Lyon haven’t been able to get the better of Montpellier very often in past seasons, and Der Zakarian’s men now seem capable of gathering a respectable set of results after two consecutive wins. However, the ruthless hosts are expected to prove to be too strong for a fatigued Paillade, and we cannot imagine anything other than a dominant home win.
