Newcastle United and Burnley Place in the EFL Cup second round on Tuesday night after both got off to a bad start to the new Premier League season.
The Magpies and Clarets are two of five clubs that have lost each of their first two games in England’s top division.
Prediction for this match
Equipped with a launch from West Ham United and Aston Villa, Steve Bruce would have expected his Newcastle side to collect at least one point from these games.
That was the minimum requirement after the majority of the squad remained last season, but the Magpies have conceded six goals in consecutive defeats.
While Bruce can rightly argue that a few decisions didn’t result in his team, Newcastle haven’t done enough to make any money from either game.
Bruce will be optimistic that a home game against Southampton will give his players an opportunity to end their August schedule on a good end.
Still, the focus will be on getting a win at St. James’ Park on Tuesday night against opponents who have suffered the same fate over the past two weeks.
After taking an early lead against Brighton & Hove Albion on Matchday 1, Burnley was in a prime position to get his campaign off to a perfect start.
After the break, however, the Seagulls fought their way back to a 2-1 win, which was followed by a 2-0 defeat in Liverpool on Saturday.
Burnley has done relatively well on Merseyside and has worried its hosts on both sides Diogo iota and Sadio mane to score the decisive goals.
Still, there is general consensus that the Clarets will need fresh faces before the end of the transfer window to stay above the relegation zone.
These two clubs will meet for the first time in the League Cup on Tuesday.

With just three days behind the Southampton game, Bruce is likely to make sweeping changes to his Newcastle starting line-up.
Ryan Fraser, Joelinton and Dwight Gayle could form a front three with Sean Longstab and Jeff Hendrick Get chances in the middle of the pitch.
goalkeeper Mark Gillespie should appear between the sticks while Emil Krafth and Ciaran Clark are in line to be drafted into the defense.
Wayne Hennessey and Nathan Collins will almost certainly make their first starts for Burnley after coming from Crystal Palace and Stoke City respectively.
Phil Bardsley, Erik Pieters and Jay Rodriguez should also come on the team while Sean Dyche decide to hand over starts to at least one of the youths in the club.
Newcastle United possible starting line-up:
Gillespie; Krafth, Fernandez, Clark; Murphy, Longstaff, Hendrick, Lewis; Joelinton, Gayle, Fraser
Burnley possible starting line-up:
Hennessey; Bardsley, Collins, Mee, Dodgson; McNeil, Brownhill, Cork, Pieters; Rodriguez, Barnes
Probability: Newcastle United 2-1 Burnley
While both managers will inevitably rotate for this game, we nonetheless expect highly competitive competition. However, Newcastle’s greater strength in depth could prove to be crucial and we believe the home side will see close winners at St James’ Park.
