After a few successful days at the Stadio Olimpico now Roma Travel south to meet upgraded Salernitana On Sunday.
While the Giallorossi took the momentum of an opening win in European competition to seal successive victories, their hosts lost in Bologna on their return to Serie A after 22 years of absence.
Prediction for this match
A new, Jose MourinhoThe mentioned era began in the Italian capital last weekend when the Roma defeated Fiorentina in the opening game of Serie A – the first of two victories in five days for the Portuguese coach.
His team’s cause was undoubtedly aided by a dubious decision to send visiting goalkeepers Bartlomiej Dragowski out for a barely noticeable clip of Tammy Abraham‘s ankle at the Olimpico early in the first half, and despite a valiant effort by 10-man opponents, Roma clinched a 3-1 win thanks to two goals from former Viola midfielder Jordan Veretout.
While Veretout has been called up by France for the first time since then, ahead of next month’s World Cup qualifiers, a lot of attention has centered on the golden boy’s long-awaited return to the competition Nicolo Zaniolowho impressed before being sacked for a second bookable offense in a highly competitive second half.
The Italian international, who is finally injury-free after two unfortunate years, had another chance on Thursday evening and met the counterattack in a 3-0 win against Trabzonspor in the playoffs of the Europa Conference League. Zaniolo’s first goal since July 2020 helped Roma qualify for the group stage after a 5-1 aggregate win.
Mourinho – who still has a Serie A points-per-game ratio that is only surpassed by Antonio Conte this century – decided against excessive rotation and was rewarded for his belief in continuity.
The former Real Madrid manager will now expect to maintain that momentum as Roma try to resolve the away problems that undermined their top 4 ambitions last season.
Under Mourinho’s compatriot Paulo Fonseca, The Giallorossi have not won any of their last seven league games away from home – lost five – and the last time they had a long such streak was in 2000, when they played 11 straight straight away games Fabio Capello.
After an action-packed season debut last weekend, Salernitana is hoping to extend the Roma’s away game on Sunday, but will certainly oppose it unless they can back things up.
The southern team only made 109 passes at Stadio Arechi – the fewest of all teams, with every other Serie A team making at least double that number – as they lost 3-2 to Bologna last time around.
Have seen Stefan Strandberg Released in the 32nd minute, the Granata took the lead shortly after the break, after their Emilian colleagues were also reduced to 10 men. However, due to a collapse in the last quarter of the game, a more experienced team from Bologna secured the points, leaving Salernitana empty-handed at the final whistle.
After the Campanian team rose to the top division after their second place in Empoli in Serie B, they have returned to the elite after more than two decades of absence – only their third attempt in the hundred-year history to reach the top division.
Owner of Leeds United Andrea Radrizzani has since been tied to a takeover as the club seeks to survive in Serie A and then thrive.
Last season, head coach Fabrizio Castori saw his side deny ambitious Monza and promotion favorites Lecce a place in the big time, and he was busy reshaping his team for the off-season challenges.
Top scorer Gennaro Tutino – on loan from Naples last season but now at Parma – has been replaced by the former Crotone striker Simy, and the Nigerian frontman is about to make his home debut against the Roma. After his successful last season – although he played for the bottom of the league – he will hope to revive his form at his new club and give Salernitana a big shock this weekend.

Jose Mourinho has stated his intention not to change his squad too often in the first few weeks of his final tenure. Therefore, the team that competes on Sunday should be very similar to the one against Trabzonspor during the week. Because of this, Rui Patricio will continue in goal, with Tammy Abraham going up front again as he is aiming for a first goal in Giallorossi colors.
However, Nicolo Zaniolo will be frustrated missing more playing time due to a suspension for his red card last Sunday Eldor Shomurodov the preferred candidate to replace in support of Abraham.
Injured defense attorney Chris Smalling will pause again as he recovers from a hamstring strain he sustained in training last week. The former Manchester United man becomes a long-term injured Leonardo Spinazzola absent but Mourinho should otherwise have a full squad to choose from.
In the meantime, the hosts are expected to handle the summer arrivals Simy and. mate Federico Bonazzoli in the front from the start, after the former was only considered fit enough to play in the second half in Bologna. Milan Djuric makes space due to injury.
midfield player Francesco Di Tacchio returns from suspension and is replaced Leonardo Capezzi in the engine room, however Frederic Veseli still has a knee problem and cannot join the squad for the Roma visit.
Former Norwegian U21 captain Stefan Strandberg recently came from Russia and led the Granata’s three-man defense last week but is now suspended due to his opening day release – Luka Bogdan is expected to be represented.
Salernitana possible starting line-up:
Belec; Bogdan, Gyomber, Jaroszynski; Kechrida, Obi, Di Tacchio, M. Coulibaly, Ruggeri; Simy, Bonazzoli
Roma possible starting line-up:
Patrick; Karsdorp, Ibanez, Mancini, Vina; Cristante, Veretout; Shomurodov, Pellegrini, Mkhitaryan; Abraham
Probability: Salernitana 1-3 Roma
While they have proven to be a formidable force at the Olimpico of late, the Roma have been far less stable on the streets. Nonetheless, they have been unbeaten in 36 games against newly promoted players and are unlikely to break such a record in Salerno.
If Simy gets on his feet quickly, the home side should break through the Giallorossi’s defense, but the guests have a multitude of firepower at their disposal that Salernitana simply cannot offer.
