In the first round of games of the 2021-22 championship season, two teams will clash with high hopes reading make the trip to Staffordshire to take them over City of Stoke.
Reading narrowly missed the playoffs last year while the hosts only got out of reach in the final third of the season, and both sides have their sights set on a top six this time around.
Prediction for this match
Headed by Michael O’Neill, Stoke City got off to a strong start last season, hovering for playoff spots at halftime, but their form quickly deteriorated in the New Year.
With just six wins from the 24 games after the turn of the year, the Potters finished in 14th place, although the season ended with an impressive 2-0 win against sixth-placed AFC Bournemouth with a climax.
With O’Neill maintaining the trust of the Stoke hierarchy and having a lot of dead weight removed from the squad in the summer transfer window, this could be a big season for the Potters who will be anxious to push the playoffs further after last season’s disappointment after the Halftime.
On the whole, she got her pre-season campaign in good shape with O’Neill overseeing victories over Linfield, Crewe Alexandra and Aston Villa.
While they suffered a disappointing 2-1 loss to third division side Wigan Athletic, the Potters bounced back in their last friendly with a commendable 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers, which provided plenty of encouragement for the new campaign.
They had a difficult opening encounter and are hosting a team from Reading that narrowly missed the playoffs last season.
Reading certainly had a mixed season last season as he sat at the top of the championship standings until the 11th game of the season.
They were eventually taken off the top by a 3-0 win against opponents on Saturday but managed to hold a spot in the playoffs for most of the campaign.
Veljko PaunovicThe team then finished fifth by mid-March, but after just one win from the last eleven games of the season, the Royals fell back to seventh place, eventually finishing sixth seven points behind Bournemouth.
The Royals go into this season to get even better and get a top six result, although their pre-season preparations were far from ideal after being confidently defeated by West Ham United and Crystal Palace and with a 1: 1 draws were held by third division Charlton Athletic after a narrow 1-0 win over Lincoln City.
After last season’s early success, Paunovic will know the importance of a quick start to the championship and his squad will be eager to put a win on the board the first time they ask for a platform for the busy run ahead to offer.

Stoke City’s roster for Saturday’s game is very different from the one that completed the 2020-21 season, with the likes of Ryan Woods, Lee Gregory, Bruno Martins India, John Obi Mikel and Liam Lindsay all come with permanent offers while Benik Afob and Peter Etebo have completed loan moves to Millwall and Watford respectively.
Exciting central defender Nathan Collins Also left for Burnley in the summer, but the Potters brought with the capture of Ben Wilmot from Watford.
Mario Vrancic was another arrival joining Norwich City on a free transfer while a striker Sam Surridge was the latest addition to have left AFC Bournemouth despite struggling with the likes of that Steven Fletcher and Jacob Brown for a seat in the front row.
Tyrese Campbell, another O’Neill attacking star will miss the start of the campaign as he continues to recover from an injury that excluded him for much of last season.
While Reading hasn’t had that much movement in the summer transfer window, they are sure to feel the effects of the exciting midfielder’s departure Michael Olisewho joined Crystal Palace last season after scoring seven goals and 12 assists in the championship.
John Swift Has the ability to cover Olise’s attack contributions if his ongoing injury problems don’t persist.
However, Olise’s absence leaves a physical void in Reading’s front with both strikers George Puscas or midfielder Andy Rinomhota expected to fill in as a makeshift winger.
midfield player Felipe Araruna will be out as he continues to recover from a serious knee injury.
Stoke City possible starting line-up:
Bursic; Wilmot, Souttar, Fox; Smith, Vrancic, Allen, Tymon; Powell; Fletcher, brown
Reading possible starting grid:
Cabral; Yiadom, Moore, Morrison, McIntyre; Rinomhota, Laurent; Puscas, Swift, Ejaria; Joao
Probability: Stoke City 1-1 reading
Reading had a particularly impressive start to last season under Paunovic and still owns the majority of their key players, while Stoke could be an entirely new offering this season with several valuable additions and the removal of dead weight.
We see both sides start with a stalemate as both look for a good start while fearing defeat.
