America Mineiro assume Sports Recife in the Brazilian Serie A on Monday in a key battle towards the bottom of the table.
Sport Recife, currently in the top of the four relegation spots, can overtake América Mineiro in the table with a victory.
For América Mineiro, who was promoted from Serie B as runner-up last season, surviving relegation is undoubtedly the main objective of this campaign.
That was evident in how quickly they decided to fire Lucas Goncalves, who had moved from his position as deputy director to Jorge Sampaoli after the Argentine left for Marseille at the end of last season.
Goncalves lasted just five league games under the club’s charge, with just one point understandably considered an unacceptable comeback.
In fact, so far changing managers has been a more than justifiable decision, with a new boss Vagner mancini guiding Coelho outside the relegation zone having initially added eight points in his first four games in charge.
However, successive defeats to Fortaleza and Atlético Mineiro in their last two games may have shown that being a new coach is rebounding rather than a long-term indication of where the playing team really stands.
As such, Monday’s home game against relegation rival Sport Recife is likely to be seen as a great match in terms of rebuilding morale and confidence within the team.
Sport Recife, meanwhile, narrowly survived their first season back in the top flight of Brazil last season, showing their next opponents that it is certainly an achievable goal.
However, they cannot afford to take anything for granted, as their slow start to the current campaign clearly demonstrates.
Umberto Louzer He hasn’t had the positive impact he would have liked since he became manager in April, as the man who guided Chapecoense to promotion last season has only won four of his 16 games in charge of his new club thus far.
Indeed, Leao they haven’t been able to win any of their last seven league games, slipping into the relegation zone in the process after being beaten 2-1 at home by Fluminense last time out.
However, a win in Belo Horizonte on Monday would rectify that, by ensuring they come out of the last four at the expense of their opponents.
América Mineiro is likely to run out of Leo Passos, with the forward still suffering a muscle injury.
Otherwise, however, Mancini seems to have a full squad available, with a few possible changes after back-to-back losses.
Meanwhile, the sport is unlikely to have Patric available due to positive COVID-19 test from right back.
Sander, Iago Maidana, Joao Igor Y Leandro barcia They could all stay out with injury as well, but the foursome could be back in action at the end of July.
Possible starting line-up for América Mineiro:
Cavichioli; Eduardo, Potiguar, Cardoso; Eduardo, Juninho, Juninho, Ruschel; Nazario; Carlos Alberto, Ribamar
Possible starting line-up for Sport Recife:
Becker; Calegari, Manoel, Braz, Danilo; Martinelli, Wellington; Luiz Henrique, Ganso, Nene; Hunters
Correct Score: América Mineiro 1-1 Sport Recife
We expect a very close fight in Belo Horizonte on Monday, with neither team wanting to lose to a relegation rival.
As such, it wouldn’t be surprising to see some loot produced, which would be enough to keep hosts out of the drop zone and visitors within contact distance to escape it.
